Shin splints cause acute pain along the shin bone and can affect your ability to walk, exercise, train, and play sports. You can develop shin splints from running, dancing, working out, and other high-impact exercise, particularly on hard surfaces. At Prolific Wellness Chiropractic and Sports Rehab, our chiropractor Dr. Tony Tran has years of experience evaluating and treating shin splints in Portland, OR. Learn more about shin splints, and then make an appointment with us for rehabilitation and physical therapy.

What Are Shin Splints?

The medical term for shin splints is medial tibial stress syndrome. Shin splints are an overuse injury, which means that they are an injury caused by repetitive stress to the muscles and bones in the lower leg. Athletes, people who exercise frequently, members of the military, and people with osteoporosis are more likely to get shin splints.

Why Do Shin Splints Occur?

Shin splints occur when the shin bone undergoes repeated stress. Stress to the shin bone and surrounding muscles and connective tissues can cause inflammation, tenderness, irritation, weakness, and pain. Without rest and proper treatment, the bone will not have time to heal and the damage will get worse and cause more pain. The most common cause of shin splints is exercising or working out on hard surfaces, starting a new exercise routine, switching between high and low intensity activity too quickly, not warming up properly before a workout, and increasing your level of physical activity too quickly.

How Can Dr. Tran Help With Shin Splints?

Dr. Tran will do a complete physical examination and run diagnostic testing to confirm that you have shin splints. He will evaluate how you walk, your strength and reflexes, your range of motion, and your posture and balance. He will check for signs of tenderness and weakness in the shin. He may take an x-ray, MRI, or bone scan to rule out a stress fracture. He will then design a personalized recovery and rehabilitation plan for you. Physical therapy, custom orthotics, and strength training exercises may relieve pain and promote healing. Dr. Tran may recommend lifestyle changes to support your rehabilitation at home, including exercise and activity modification or full rest, dietary and nutrition changes, and therapeutic exercises and stretches.
